Shake Shield Product Data Sheet

Description: A one-coat, high solids semi-transparent finish exclusively designed for unpainted wood shakes and shingles. Armstrong’s Shake Shield is made with heavy and light-bodied oils. Heavy bodied oils provide water repellency. Pigments reflect the sun’s UV rays. Light bodied oils combined with solvent penetrate deep into the wood. Armstrong’s Shake Shield repels water and replenishes the natural oils baked out by the sun, thereby adding flexibility to the wood. The pigments reflect the sun’s UV rays, thus retarding the graying process of the wood.

Use: Armstrong's Shake Shield is specifically designed for weathered wood shake or shingle roofs. Although Armstrong's Shake Shield works extremely well on older roofs of 15-20 years old, it should be applied to newer roof installations as well. 60-80% of the natural oils leach and bake out of wood roofs within the first five years. It is to the advantage of any owners of a wood roof to use Armstrong's Shake Shield at the earliest opportunity.

Surface Preparation: Surface must be clean and dry before application. If heavy moss or mildew is present, they can be removed by a high-pressure water wash. If the weather conditions encourage excessive moss and mildew growth, an EPA approved mildicide should be considered. Hint: The more that can be done to remove gray color and lighten the color of the wood roof to be coated, the more receptive the wood will become to the pigment providing a much more dramatic finished appearance.

Application: Stir well before use. Start at the ridge and work down to the eave, treating 2 or 3 rows of shakes or shingles at a time. Apply liberally. Allow the dryness of the wood to determine the quantity used (see "Coverage") .Avoid dripping, running and over spray of Armstrong's Shake Shield as this might cause damage to plants, glass or painted surfaces. For maximum results, an airless spray unit should be used, although Armstrong's Shake Shield can be applied by brush, roller or pump-up garden sprayer (see Container for more details about airless application) .

Wear goggles, a long-sleeved shirt, full-length pants and an OSHA approved respirator for protection. Always avoid walking the coated areas as they may be slippery.

Clean Up: Clean spatters and spills immediately with paint thinner after use. Clean tools and equipment with paint thinner.

Flame Retardent Option: Armstrong’s Shake Shield is also available fortified with flame retardant. This additive is designed to help contain flame spread and help reduce fire damage. This is specifically a one coat product.
